Desk:On the final leg of his three-nation tour, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Guyanese Parliament on Thursday. Emphasizing India’s commitment as a global partner, PM Modi said, “India has always adhered to the principle of democracy first and humanity first, fulfilling its global responsibilities.” He reiterated that democracy is deeply ingrained in India’s DNA, perspective, and actions.
Speaking about the shared history of India and Guyana, PM Modi said both nations share a legacy of resilience, labor, and struggle. “Nearly 180 years ago, an Indian set foot on Guyanese soil. Since then, the relationship between our people and nations has been one of warmth and camaraderie,” he noted.
Island Nations Are Oceanic Nations for India
Highlighting India’s perspective on smaller nations, PM Modi said, “India does not view island nations as small countries but as significant oceanic nations.” He emphasized that India has never pursued expansionism or exploited the resources of others and believes every nation holds global importance.
Global Cooperation Over Conflict
Addressing global challenges, PM Modi remarked, “This is not an era of conflict. The world must unite to collaborate in every field, from space to the oceans.” He stressed the need for universal cooperation and identifying those who create global disruptions. Offering assurance, he said, “India is always ready to help during any crisis, acting promptly as a trusted responder.”
Unforgettable Taste of Guyanese Chutney
Reflecting on his earlier visit to Guyana 24 years ago, PM Modi shared a fond memory of tasting Guyanese chutney, saying, “I still remember its unique taste.”
Upon his arrival in Guyana, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by President Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips, and other cabinet members. He received the key to Georgetown City as a token of close India-Guyana relations. PM Modi expressed gratitude for this honor, emphasizing India’s eagerness to deepen ties with CARICOM nations.
PM Modi was also conferred Guyana’s highest honor, “The Order of Excellence,” along with Dominica’s “Award of Honor” during his tour. Before visiting Guyana, PM Modi attended the G20 Summit in Brazil and made a significant stop in Nigeria.
