Washington: US President Donald Trump praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the United States, stating that Modi is doing excellent work in India. Trump went on to call Modi a “great leader.”
During a joint press conference at the White House, President Trump remarked, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a much tougher negotiator than I am. There is no comparison between us. He is far better than me.”
On Thursday, President Trump warmly welcomed PM Modi to the White House and embraced him, calling him a “good friend.” He acknowledged Modi’s strong negotiation skills but made it clear that India would not be exempt from high tariffs imposed by the US.
India-US Trade Relations
The trade deficit between India and the US stands at $50 billion, with India having a trade surplus. In 2023, the total trade of goods and services between the two nations reached approximately $190.1 billion. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the US exports to India were valued at around $70 billion, while India’s exports to the US totaled $120 billion.
Support for Extradition of 26/11 Conspirator
Trump also expressed his support for the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, who is currently imprisoned in the US. Trump stated, “He is going back to India to face justice.”
