Every year, Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated on the Tritiya Tithi (third lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Vaishakh, according to the Hindu calendar. In Hindu beliefs, Parashurama is considered the sixth incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu and a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Parashurama to relieve the Earth from the burden of sinful, destructive, and unrighteous kings. Tradition holds that Parashurama was born during the Pradosh Kaal (early evening period). Therefore, when Tritiya Tithi coincides with Pradosh Kaal, Parashurama Jayanti is observed.
In 2025, Parashurama Jayanti will be celebrated on April 29.
Why Parashurama Is Not Widely Worshipped
Unlike other incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama is not widely worshipped. According to Hindu traditions, it is believed that Parashurama still resides on Earth. Therefore, unlike Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, he is not worshipped as a deity who has left the mortal world. In the Ramayana, it is mentioned that Parashurama appeared during the wedding ceremony of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita, where he had a significant encounter with Lord Rama, who is considered Vishnu’s seventh incarnation.
Another reason why his worship is rare is that Parashurama is regarded as an intense, fierce form of Vishnu. Worshiping him is believed to invoke immense energy, which an average person may find difficult to absorb or control. Thus, his worship is typically recommended for those involved in adventurous or courageous professions.
The Axe of Parashurama
Parashurama is called so because of the divine axe (Parashu) gifted to him by Lord Shiva, whom he ardently worshiped. Apart from Lord Shiva, Parashurama also received knowledge and training from sages like Vishwamitra and Rishi Richika.
