To go against the flow often brings discomposure in one’s life. But many do take the risk nevertheless, face the upshot with courage and set milestones. The story of Magan Kamariya is also along these lines –all thanks to guavas.
An organic farmer, Magan Kamariya from Tankara tehsil of Gujarat is one of the successful farmers who has been gaining rich returns from cultivating fruit crops organically.
The guavas of Magan Kamariya are famous because of their exceptional taste, size and weight.
Magan Kamariya cultivates guava with new technology and produces guavas of large size and weight up to 2 kg. He is cultivating guava on more than 50 acres of land that helps him to earn a lucrative amount of one Million rupees every year.
While narrating his own inspirational and success story, Magan explained that earlier he used to grow cotton, peanuts and cumin. However, the earning was not upto the mark. Five years ago he came to know about Israeli technology-grown guava. He decided to start cultivating guava. He then acquire 5000 guava saplings grown in Thailand from Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
“Firstly, I learned to grow guava from Israeli technology. In this, irrigation is done by drip method. Drops of water are dripped onto the plants,” said Magan.
After about a year and a half of hard work, Magan started getting the fruits of all his efforts and determination in the form of Guavas. Guava ranging from 350 grams to one and a half kg weight started growing in low altitude plants only. The taste of these guavas was so good that they were well received. Now, Magan has traders from Surat, Navsari, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Morbi and Rajkot.
His wife Pushpaben, who supports Magan in agriculture, said that these plants have to be looked after a lot. Every plant has to be examined so that they do not fall prey to insects. However, crop protection can be done only with some home remedies. Despite this, it takes less effort than other crops.
Today Magan is cultivating guava on more than 50 acres of land. This year, his farm has produced 35 tonnes of guava.
Magan said, “these guavas are in great demand because of their wonderous taste. Our guavas have become so famous today that they are sold from the farm itself.
On asking about the cultivation of organic guava, Magan explained, “Research is necessary before starting organic guava gardening. You should know about the market, demand and transportation of the place where you want to do farming. With this, the land on which we are going to start gardening should be less watery. Organic fertilizer should be used instead of chemical. This also increases the fertile power of the land. There should be a distance of 9/6 between the two plants. Saplings are planted in the months of July to September. Up to 6-7 kg of guava is released from a plant in the first year. After some time, production up to 10-12 kg starts.”
As far as precautions are concerned, Magan said that the right time and right soil is necessary for guava gardening. We have to care of the climate and rain conditions. So, preparation is necessary for that.”
“Often people start using chemical fertilizer for more production. But, we should avoid it. This not only causes damage to the plant but it is also harmful for the land,” concluded Magan.
