Tehran : Iran has condemned in the strongest terms the sinking of its naval frigate IRIS Dena by a United States submarine, calling the attack a “heinous crime” that the Iranian nation will “neither forget nor forgive.” The incident, which occurred on March 4 approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle, Sri Lanka, has claimed numerous lives and intensified geopolitical tensions in the region.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, paid homage to the crew members who perished in the attack, highlighting the tragic loss of life. Baqaei labeled the incident a war crime, stating that it violated international law, including the Geneva Conventions and the United Nations definition of aggression. He also alleged that the United States deliberately obstructed rescue operations, further compounding the humanitarian toll.
Background of the Incident
The IRIS Dena was reportedly en route to participate in joint naval exercises, following an official invitation extended by the Indian Navy, when it was struck by a torpedo from the U.S. submarine. The attack took place in international waters, raising serious questions about the adherence to maritime law and the rules of engagement.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
The assault resulted in significant loss of life among the crew. Sri Lankan authorities quickly launched rescue operations, successfully saving dozens of sailors while recovering the bodies of those who died. Sri Lanka has committed to providing humanitarian assistance and facilitating the repatriation of the deceased to Iran.
Diplomatic and Regional Implications
The sinking of IRIS Dena has dramatically escalated tensions between Iran and the United States, with both regional and global ramifications. The attack has intensified concerns over maritime security, freedom of navigation, and the sanctity of international norms in the Indian Ocean region.
India, which recently facilitated humanitarian support for another Iranian vessel, IRIS Lavan, received acknowledgment and appreciation from Tehran for its role in aiding Iranian sailors.
The Iranian government has vowed to pursue justice for the victims and has warned that such acts will have enduring consequences for international relations, potentially reshaping diplomatic and security alignments in the region.
