Mango Basundi Recipe – How to Make this Summer-Special Indian Dessert

As soon as summer begins, the king of fruits — mango — finds a special spot in most refrigerators. People enjoy mangoes not just as a fruit, but also by turning them into delicious dishes and refreshing drinks. One such unique and delightful recipe is Mango Basundi.

Mango Basundi is a traditional Indian dessert that’s especially popular in parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka. Made using milk, mango pulp, cardamom powder, and saffron, this dessert is rich, creamy, and incredibly flavorful. Once you taste it, there’s a good chance you’ll crave it again and again. It’s a particular favorite among children too. Let’s take a look at how to make this summer-special, tasty treat.

Ingredients for Mango Basundi:

  • 1 liter full cream milk
  • 1 cup mango pulp
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
  • 8–10 saffron strands
  • 10–12 chopped almonds and pistachios
  • 1 tbsp rose water

How to Make Mango Basundi:

  1. In a heavy-bottomed pan, pour the milk and bring it to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Stir continuously to prevent the milk from sticking to the bottom and burning.
  3. Boil until the milk reduces to half its original quantity. This may take about 30–40 minutes.
  4. Once the milk thickens, add sugar and stir well. Cook for another 5–7 minutes.
  5. Lower the heat, add the mango pulp, and mix thoroughly. Let it cook for 2–3 more minutes.
  6. Now add cardamom powder, saffron strands, and rose water. Mix everything gently.
  7. Garnish with chopped almonds and pistachios.

Your delicious Mango Basundi is ready to serve! Enjoy it chilled or warm, just the way you like it.
