Desk:India is taking a major step to strengthen its military power, making its adversaries uneasy. The Indian Army is set to upgrade its T-72 tanks with 1000-horsepower (HP) engines, significantly enhancing their speed and firepower on the battlefield.
Defense Ministry Signs $248 Million Deal
The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million (₹2,060 crore) contract with Russia’s state-owned company, Rosoboronexport (ROE), to procure fully assembled and semi-assembled 1000 HP engines for the T-72 tanks. Additionally, the deal includes technology transfer, which will give a major boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Production in Chennai’s Heavy Vehicles Factory
Under this agreement, the engines will be assembled and later produced under license at the Armored Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicles Factory) in Avadi, Chennai. This move will enhance India’s defense manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The upgraded engines will provide the Indian Army with greater speed and operational efficiency on the battlefield.
Upgrade from 780 HP to 1000 HP
Currently, the T-72 tanks in the Indian Army are powered by 780 HP engines, which have been in service for several years. With the new 1000 HP engines, these tanks will see a significant improvement in speed, maneuverability, and combat performance, enabling the Army to counter enemy threats more effectively.
China and Pakistan on High Alert
This major upgrade in India’s armored fleet is expected to raise concerns in neighboring countries like China and Pakistan. With these powerful, modernized T-72 tanks, the Indian Army will be better equipped to tackle any military challenge. This deal is a crucial step in India’s strategic defense planning, ensuring its forces remain ahead in the evolving battlefield landscape.
