New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday described the India–US Trade Agreement as a “tremendous opportunity” for the country, asserting that it is the most advantageous deal India has secured compared to its neighbours and competing economies.
Addressing a press conference a day after the agreement was announced, Goyal said India’s interests were given top priority in the negotiations. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s close rapport with US President Donald Trump for finalising what he termed a landmark agreement.
“We all know that the Prime Minister, leveraging his friendly relationship and close ties with President Trump, has finalised a trade deal with the United States that is the best India has received compared to all our neighbours and competing countries. This is a great deal for all of us,” Goyal said.
The minister said the government had intended to present details of the agreement in Parliament but was unable to do so due to disruptions by opposition parties. He criticised the Congress and its allies, including the DMK, TMC and Samajwadi Party, alleging unruly behaviour in the House and accusing them of preventing a proper discussion on the issue.
Goyal reiterated that the trade agreement would unlock unprecedented opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs and skilled workers. He said it would strengthen initiatives such as Make in India for the World, Design in India for the World and Innovate in India for the World, while also enabling access to advanced technologies from the United States.
In a post on X, Goyal said the deal reflects the power of two large democracies working together for shared prosperity and would accelerate India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. He lauded the leadership of both Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, calling the agreement a historic turning point in India–US relations.
“This is not just a trade deal; it is a milestone that will reshape India–US ties, co-create technologies, co-develop solutions and contribute to peace, growth and a brighter future for both nations,” he said.
The agreement comes just a week after India concluded negotiations on a landmark Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, marking another significant step in strengthening its global economic partnerships.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Modi spoke with President Trump and welcomed the reduction in tariffs on Made in India products to 18 per cent. In a post on X, Modi thanked the US President on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion people and said the cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies would unlock immense opportunities for mutually beneficial growth.
“President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability and prosperity. India fully supports his efforts for peace, and I look forward to working closely with him to take our partnership to unprecedented heights,” the Prime Minister said.
