Desk:The announcement of China’s plan to build a super dam on the Brahmaputra River has created a stir. On Tuesday, India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the Indian government is closely monitoring China’s plan to construct a dam near India’s border in Tibet. He emphasized that China must ensure that such projects do not harm the interests of downstream nations like India. Singh assured that India will continue to assess the situation and take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.
China’s Explanation on the Super Dam
Last month, China approved plans to construct the world’s largest dam in a vast Himalayan valley near the Indian border. The Brahmaputra River, originating in Tibet, flows through Arunachal Pradesh and then into Bangladesh. Experts have raised concerns that the dam could cause flooding or drought in India. Responding to these worries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that the project would not negatively impact downstream areas.
India’s Vigilance and Progress
During a state conference held at Mufeed-e-Aam Inter College, Singh reiterated that the Indian government remains vigilant. He urged China to ensure that its activities in upstream regions do not harm downstream interests.
Singh also highlighted India’s advancements in various sectors. “Earlier, India wasn’t taken seriously on international platforms, but today, the world listens when India speaks,” he said. Singh noted that India has progressed significantly, with its global economic ranking improving from 11th to 5th position. He confidently predicted that India would join the top three economies within the next two and a half years.
