Desk:Since Mohamed Muizzu became the President of the Maldives, relations between New Delhi and Malé have witnessed ups and downs. Initially, Muizzu displayed closeness to China and made strong anti-India remarks. However, facing economic challenges, the Maldives has turned to India for support. Reflecting this, Maldives’ Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel recently embarked on a three-day visit to India and held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
During their meeting, Jaishankar emphasized that the Maldives exemplifies India’s “Neighborhood First” policy and assured continued support to the island nation. Highlighting India’s commitment, he said, “Our collaboration reflects the depth of our partnership. India has always stood by the Maldives, especially in challenging times.”
Economic Support and Development Projects
The Maldives’ economy is currently facing significant challenges. In their discussions, Jaishankar mentioned India’s initiatives to boost trade using local currencies and financial aid extended to help the Maldives overcome its economic difficulties. India has also provided critical financial assistance, including a $40 million currency swap arrangement and facilitated the export of essential goods to the Maldives.
The two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementing high-impact community development projects under India’s grant assistance. Khaleel reiterated President Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening economic and maritime security partnerships with India.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Khaleel’s visit focused on exploring ways to enhance bilateral trade, investment, and cooperation across multiple sectors. He acknowledged India’s timely support during emergencies, expressing gratitude for New Delhi’s assistance.
Jaishankar noted, “Our engagement in diverse sectors has grown, and this cooperation underscores India’s steadfast commitment to its neighbors.” The meeting reaffirmed India-Maldives ties, setting the stage for deeper collaboration in trade, development, and regional security.
