Desk: After the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has intensified its diplomatic efforts on international platforms to isolate Pakistan. India reached out to all the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and urged them to send a strong message against terrorism. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar took the lead in this initiative.
He has spoken with foreign ministers from countries like Algeria, Greece, Guyana, Panama, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, and Somalia, all of whom are currently non-permanent members of the UNSC. Jaishankar also had a phone discussion with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Jaishankar shared on social media that Guterres strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and expressed support for India’s efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
India vs. Pakistan in the UNSC
India sought a clear mention of the Indian government in the UNSC statement and wanted the terrorist organization “The Resistance Front” (TRF) to be named specifically. However, this was not possible due to opposition from Pakistan and China. The statement used general language like “relevant authorities.”
While Pakistan wanted Jammu and Kashmir to be referred to as a disputed region, India successfully stopped this with support from the United States and France. The UNSC condemned the attack and called for the perpetrators, planners, financiers, and sponsors to be brought to justice.
India also highlighted the statement made by Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, where he admitted that Pakistan had supported terrorist organizations for decades. India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Yogna Patel, called this statement an exposure of Pakistan’s true intentions and stated that Pakistan had become a rogue state promoting global terrorism.
Russia’s Strong Support for India’s UNSC Seat
In the midst of this, a significant statement from Russia has emerged. Russia has expressed strong support for India’s rightful claim to a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed Russia’s firm backing for India and Brazil in the reformed UNSC.
