India confers Gandhi peace prize to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

New Delhi: The famous Gandhi Peace Prize will be given to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the year 2020. The decision to award this annual honor to the founder of Bangladesh is also important because PM Narendra Modi is going to Dhaka after four days. Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award instituted by the Government of India since 1995, the 125th Birth Anniversary commemoration year of Mahatma Gandhi. The award is given to individuals and institutions for their contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods.

The Jury for Gandhi Peace Prize is chaired by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ,and comprises of two ex-officio members, namely the Chief Justice of India and Leader of the single largest Opposition Party in Lok Sabha. Two eminent members are also part of the Jury, namely Om Birla, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder of Sulabh International Social Service Organization.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Dhaka on March 26 to attend celebrations of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Rahman was the first President and later the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was assassinated on August 15, 1975. Rahman is known as the “Father of the Nation” or simply “Mujib” in Bangladesh.
