Desk : India has signalled its readiness to play a proactive role in the recovery and stabilisation of Gaza, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri affirming that New Delhi sees a meaningful role for itself as the situation evolves on the ground.
Speaking to the media after high-level discussions during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Israel, Misri said that while the contours of India’s involvement would depend on developments in Gaza, the intent to contribute remains firm. “Yes, we do see a role. What exactly that role will be depends on gaining more clarity as to how things develop on the ground in Gaza,” he said.
Highlighting India’s developmental track record and technical expertise, the Foreign Secretary noted that New Delhi possesses specific capabilities that would be highly relevant in addressing the challenges in Gaza. He pointed out that India is already implementing projects worth nearly $170 million for the benefit of Palestinian communities. In addition, projects valued at around $40 million are in the pipeline, focusing on education, healthcare, capacity building and other social sectors.
Misri emphasised that as the regional situation transitions towards stability under ongoing peace efforts, India would be prepared to step in at the appropriate time and contribute on the ground.
At a joint press briefing with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister Modi underscored that “humanity must never suffer because of conflict.” He described the Gaza Peace Plan as a step towards a lasting and just peace in the region and reiterated India’s continued support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at stability.
Modi also stressed the shared resolve between New Delhi and Jerusalem in combating terrorism. “India and Israel are clear that there is no place for terrorism in the world. Terrorism cannot be accepted in any form. We will continue to fight against terrorism and its supporters,” he said.
Recalling his address to the Knesset, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s backing for the UN Security Council-endorsed Gaza Peace Initiative, calling it a pathway towards a just and durable peace for the Middle East, including progress on the Palestine issue.
The current visit marks Modi’s second trip to Israel during his tenure, following his landmark visit in 2017.
