The Pradosh Vrat is observed twice a month. This time, it falls on a Monday, making the occasion even more significant. Observing the Som Pradosh Vrat or performing Rudrabhishek on this day ensures the blessings of Lord Shiva. Let’s explore the auspicious timings and the detailed procedure for performing Rudrabhishek on this day.
How to Perform Rudrabhishek on Som Pradosh Vrat?
- Preparation and Sankalp (Resolve):
In the evening, after bathing and cleansing yourself, begin by meditating on Lord Ganesha. Follow this by invoking Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, other deities, and the nine planets. Take a vow to perform the Rudrabhishek with full devotion. - Shiva Lingam Installation:
Create a Shiva Lingam using clay and place it in the north direction. Ensure the person performing the Rudrabhishek faces east. - Abhishek Procedure:
- Start by bathing the Shiva Lingam with Gangajal (holy water).
- Perform the Abhishek using sugarcane juice, cow’s raw milk, honey, ghee, and mishri (rock sugar).
- Before and after using each ingredient, pour Gangajal over the Shiva Lingam to maintain purity.
- Offerings:
Offer Bilva leaves, white sandalwood paste, rice grains (Akshat), black sesame seeds, bhang, dhatura, Aak flowers, Shami leaves, Kaner flowers, Kalawa (sacred thread), fruits, sweets, and white flowers. - Family Worship and Bhog:
Worship Lord Shiva along with the divine family, including Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. Offer Bhog (food) with utmost devotion. - Final Rituals:
Conclude the ritual with the Shiva Aarti and seek forgiveness for any errors during the process.- Collect the water or other liquids used during the Abhishek and sprinkle them in all corners of your home.
- Distribute it as Prasad among family members.
For greater efficacy, you can also recite the Rudrashtadhyayi or chant the Shiva Mantra or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra throughout the ritual. While a learned priest can perform this ceremony for better results, devotees can conduct it themselves with dedication.
