Washington: Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said that if President Donald Trump does not ‘immediately resign’ for encouraging a mob that stormed the Capitol building, the House would move ahead with the process to impeach him.
Joe Biden will take the oath of office on January 20, following Trump’s defeat in the election held on November 3. Pelosi and Democrat leaders agree that Trump should be immediately removed from office after Trump’s supporters stormed into the Capitol Building on Wednesday.
“It is the hope of members that the President will immediately resign. But if he does not, I have instructed the Rules Committee to be prepared to move forward with Congressman Jamie Raskin’s 25th Amendment legislation and a motion for impeachment,” Nancy Pelosi said in a statement on Friday.
Indian-American MP Pramila Jaipal said that the impeachment proceeding should start immediately. Congressman Kaiali’i Kahele said he fully supports Trump’s removal from the presidency, whether through the use of the 25th amendment or by bringing a forth article of impeachment against him. Every day Trump remains in the White House is another day America is unsafe, Kahele said.
Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, led Democratic members of the Committee in calling for the impeachment of Trump for instigating the attack on the Capitol. In a letter to Pelosi, lawmakers have said that it is extremely important to hold them responsible for restoring America’s global leadership on democracy and the rule of law.
