Gaza City:Hamas has called on the United States, a key mediator in the ongoing Gaza ceasefire negotiations, to ensure that Israel complies with the terms of the agreement aimed at securing the release of hostages still held in the Palestinian enclave.
Hazem Qassem, a spokesperson for Hamas, issued a statement on Saturday following the release of three captives earlier in the day. He emphasized that Washington must pressure Israel to fulfill its obligations under the truce deal if it genuinely values the lives of those still in captivity.
“The United States must compel the occupation to adhere to the agreement if it truly cares about the prisoners’ (hostages) lives,” Qassem stated, underscoring Hamas’s stance that Israel must be held accountable for its commitments.
Context of the Hostage Releases
Earlier on Saturday, three hostages were freed from Gaza as part of ongoing negotiations. However, Hamas maintains that Israel has not fully honored the terms of the deal, raising concerns about further releases and the stability of the fragile ceasefire.
The truce agreement, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, aims to de-escalate the conflict and secure the exchange of hostages and detainees. However, repeated flare-ups and accusations of violations from both sides have complicated the process.
U.S. Role in the Ceasefire Talks
The United States has been actively involved in mediating the negotiations between Hamas and Israel, working alongside regional partners to prevent further escalation. American officials have emphasized the need for both sides to honor their commitments and have urged restraint to avoid derailing the fragile peace process.
As tensions persist, international pressure is mounting on both parties to uphold their end of the agreement. While Israel insists that its military operations are necessary for national security, Hamas accuses Israeli forces of undermining the ceasefire by continuing raids and arrests in Palestinian territories.
The situation in Gaza remains highly volatile, with humanitarian organizations warning of worsening conditions for civilians caught in the conflict. As diplomatic efforts continue, the role of the United States in ensuring compliance with the ceasefire will be critical in determining the next steps for peace in the region.
