Desk:Tensions between India and Pakistan have reached a peak following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. In a strong digital retaliation, India has suspended the YouTube account of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This move follows a series of similar actions where India had previously blocked social media accounts of several Pakistani cricketers, media outlets, and journalists.
The terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam claimed the lives of 26 people. The attack was reportedly carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Following the incident, public anger in India surged against Pakistan. The Indian government responded firmly by shutting down the Attari border and announcing five major measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Additionally, the Indian Army has been granted full freedom to take decisive action, with more strict measures expected soon.
Since the attack, various Pakistani YouTube channels and social media handles have allegedly been spreading misinformation and anti-India propaganda. In response, the Indian government ordered the suspension of several accounts, including prominent news outlets like Dawn, Samaa TV, ARY News, Bol News, Raftaar, Geo News, and Suno News. Individual accounts of journalists such as Irshad Bhatti, Asma Shirazi, Umar Cheema, and Muneeb Farooq have also been restricted.
Other banned channels and handles include The Pakistan Reference, Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket, and Razi Nama. These actions were taken on the recommendation of India’s Ministry of Home Affairs, which cited that the content was provocative, communal, misleading, and harmful to national security.
In addition, the Instagram account of Pakistani Olympic javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has also been blocked in India due to a legal request following the Pahalgam attack. Users in India attempting to view his profile are greeted with a message stating: “This account isn’t available in India due to a legal request.”
