Dhaka: Hindu priest and minority leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested in Dhaka amid growing concerns over the safety and rights of minorities in Bangladesh. This development comes against the backdrop of widespread political violence following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the installation of a military-backed interim government led by Mohammed Yunus.
The arrest has sparked outrage within the Hindu community and beyond. Radharamn Das, spokesperson for ISKCON, confirmed the news, tweeting, “I just received the shocking news that Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu monk & the face and leader of Bangladeshi minorities in these difficult times, has been arrested by the Dhaka police and taken to an undisclosed location.”
Although the Bangladeshi authorities have not released an official statement, reports suggest Brahmachari was detained at Dhaka airport. His arrest follows sedition charges filed against him earlier this month for his vocal opposition to violence targeting Hindus. Protests demanding legal protections for minorities and the creation of a dedicated ministry have intensified, particularly in Rangpur, 300 km north of Dhaka.
Hindus, comprising 8% of Bangladesh’s population of 170 million, have faced increasing attacks on businesses, homes, and temples. Earlier this month, 19 individuals were charged with sedition for participating in a rally advocating minority rights in Chittagong.
Prominent Indian leaders have condemned the arrest. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called the incident an attack on the “survival and dignity” of Bangladeshi Hindus. Senior advisor Kanchan Gupta described it as “a targeted move to stifle voices of protest.”
The interim government’s claims of protecting minorities, including enhanced security during Durga Puja, have done little to assuage fears. Activists argue these measures are inadequate in the face of escalating violence.
