Desk: Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, the Indian government has announced the cancellation of the Indus Waters Treaty as a strong message to Pakistan. Now, the process of implementing this decision has begun. According to a PTI report, the government has stopped the flow of the Chenab River through the Baglihar Dam. A similar measure is being planned through the Kishanganga Dam, built over the Jhelum River.
Located in Ramban, Jammu, the Baglihar Dam, and the Kishanganga Dam in northern Kashmir, provide India with a strategic advantage over Pakistan regarding control over these rivers. These dams are used not only for power generation but also give India the ability to regulate the flow of water—either withholding or releasing it as needed.
It’s important to note that the Baglihar Dam has long been a point of contention between India and Pakistan. During its construction, Pakistan sought World Bank mediation. Similarly, Pakistan has raised objections to the Kishanganga Dam, particularly due to its impact on the Neelum River, a tributary of the Jhelum.
These rivers, which flow from India into Pakistan, are considered lifelines for both nations, especially for agricultural communities that rely heavily on river water. Despite having greater control over the rivers as per the Indus Waters Treaty, India has historically allowed a generous flow of water to Pakistan, recognizing the humanitarian need.
However, the Pahalgam terror attack appears to have been a tipping point. The Indian government, citing the brutality of the incident, has decided to nullify the treaty. In response, several Pakistani leaders have made provocative statements, though Indian leaders have refrained from any such rhetoric. Instead, India has launched a sharp and strategic diplomatic offensive that has visibly rattled Pakistan.
Prime Minister Modi recently declared that those responsible for the massacre of innocent civilians in Pahalgam will not be spared under any circumstances. Tensions remain high, and Pakistan is reportedly on edge, fearing a potential Indian military response at any time.
