Charged under Chinese territory’s new national security law

Hong Kong: The real face of China has been revealed to everyone around the world. China, the enemy of democracy, is extremely troubled by India’s democratic system of governance. China is leaving no stone unturned to suppress the democratic voice with extreme brutality. This can be exemplified by the miserable condition of Hong Kong. It is appropriate to say that China killed Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement in less than a year which is shameful to the core.

73-year-old Jimmy Lai, a Hong Kong media tycoon and democracy Activist, was denied bail on Saturday. A day earlier he was charged under the new National Security Act. Lai is the founder of ‘The Apple Daily’ Tabloid and is accused of collusion with foreign powers and endangering national security. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted Saturday morning Asia time that the security law “makes a mockery of justice.” He called for Lai’s release, saying his only crime is speaking the truth about China’s authoritarian Communist Party government.

According to ‘The Apple Daily’, his case was adjourned to April 16 at the request of prosecutors, who said police needed time to review more than 1,000 tweets and comments made on his Twitter account.

According to the newspaper, his charge sheet listed several foreign politicians who followed Lai on Twitter and cited commentaries he wrote and interviews he did with foreign media.

Lai has also been charged with taking part in unauthorized protests and with fraud over alleged violations of office lease terms. He has advocated for other countries to take a harsher stance on China.

Former MP Sixtus Baggio Leung Chung-hang has left Hong Kong. He is currently in the US and will work to pressurize Washington to give asylum to the people of Hong Kong.

“Haven Assistance, a group formed by activists in exile, revealed that Leung had departed for the US on November 30 after facing “profound political persecution” in Hong Kong. “Mr Leung sees the asylum as a new starting point for Hong Kong’s democratic cause,” the group said in a statement on Facebook.
