The sacred festival of Chaitra Navratri, which holds immense religious significance in Hindu tradition, will begin on March 19, 2026. This nine-day festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms. Devotees across the country observe fasts, perform rituals, and offer prayers to seek blessings for prosperity, strength, and spiritual growth.
According to the Vedic Panchang, Chaitra Navratri begins on the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. In 2026, this auspicious period will start on March 19 and conclude on March 27 with the celebration of Ram Navami, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Rama.
Auspicious Time for Kalash Sthapana
On the first day of Navratri, Kalash Sthapana (Ghatasthapana) is performed, which marks the formal beginning of the Navratri worship. It is considered one of the most important rituals of the festival.
According to the Panchang, the auspicious time for Kalash Sthapana on March 19 will be from approximately 6:10 AM to 8:35 AM. In addition, the Abhijit Muhurat in the afternoon is also considered favorable for performing the ritual.
Spiritual Significance of Kalash Sthapana
Kalash Sthapana symbolizes the invocation of Goddess Durga into the home or temple. During the ritual, barley seeds are sown in a pot filled with soil, and a water-filled sacred pot (kalash) is placed above it. A coconut and mango leaves are placed on top of the kalash, representing prosperity, divine energy, and auspiciousness.
The ritual is believed to symbolize the creative power of the universe. The germination of barley during the nine days signifies growth, prosperity, and the beginning of a new cycle in life.
Worship of the Nine Forms of Goddess Durga
During the nine days of Navratri, devotees worship the nine forms of the Goddess known as Navdurga:
Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri.
Each day is dedicated to one form of the Goddess. Devotees observe fasts, chant sacred hymns, perform Durga Saptashati recitations, bhajans, and havans to seek divine blessings.
Festival of Spiritual Renewal
Chaitra Navratri is not only a religious celebration but also a period of spiritual discipline, purification, and renewal. It coincides with the beginning of the Hindu New Year in many regions and symbolizes the awakening of nature and new beginnings.
Through devotion and spiritual practices during these nine sacred days, devotees believe they receive divine strength, positivity, and the blessings of Goddess Durga for a prosperous and harmonious life.
