New Delhi – India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval held a telephonic conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, to discuss the current regional situation and the Chabahar Port project. According to the official statement, Doval appreciated Iran’s constructive role in the region and expressed India’s keen interest in the development of the Chabahar Port and expanding cooperation within the framework of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
During the call, Doval conveyed gratitude for Iran’s consistent support. Ahmadian emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the ancient civilizations of India and Iran, highlighting the vast potential for political and economic collaboration. He underlined the need for swift implementation of strategic projects, adding that bilateral cooperation is vital for regional peace and stability.
What is the Chabahar Port Project?
The Chabahar Port is located in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province and is being jointly developed by India and Iran. It holds strategic importance for enhancing connectivity and trade, particularly with Afghanistan and Central Asia. The INSTC, spanning approximately 7,200 kilometers, is a multi-modal transport project connecting India with Iran, Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Central Asia, and Europe for cargo movement. India has been actively supporting this initiative.
The Doval-Ahmadian conversation comes amid heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan. Simultaneously, U.S. sanctions have cast a shadow of uncertainty over the Chabahar project. Nevertheless, India reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen the strategic port as an alternative trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia. This cooperation marks a significant step towards deepening India-Iran relations and promoting regional stability.
