Dhaka: Nahid Islam, a prominent student leader who led the fierce student protests against the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year, has resigned from his position as an Information Advisor in Mohammad Yunus’ interim government. According to a report by Dhaka Tribune, Islam submitted his resignation to the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Tuesday. There is speculation that Nahid Islam is planning to form a new political party, as he is reportedly dissatisfied with Yunus’ administration.
Islam was one of the leaders of the student movement against Sheikh Hasina’s policies last year. There had been ongoing discussions about his resignation in recent days. After submitting his resignation, Nahid addressed the media, confirming that he had resigned from the cabinet and all other committees.
It is expected that Nahid Islam will take the role of the convener of the new political party, which is set to launch this Friday afternoon. The party will be formed under the initiative of an anti-discrimination student movement and the National Citizens Committee. Discussions about the formation of the party have been ongoing for several days. On Sunday, Islam met with Mohammad Yunus, leading to speculation that he had decided to resign. When he arrived at Yunus’ residence for the meeting, his car had a government flag, but after the meeting, the flag was missing.
