Desk: Tensions in West Asia continue to escalate as the United States has reportedly carried out a major strike on Iran’s Chabahar Port. According to media reports, US fighter jets targeted military positions located in the port’s trade zone.
Reports suggest that loud explosions were heard in the area during the attack, and thick black smoke was seen rising from near the port. While the full extent of the damage has not yet been officially confirmed, there are fears of significant losses.
Earlier, the United States had also targeted Iran’s Kharg Island, which is widely considered the backbone of the country’s oil-driven economy. Several videos circulating on social media appear to show US warplanes flying near the trade zone of Chabahar Port around the time of the reported attack.
Why Chabahar Port matters to India
Iran’s Chabahar Port holds major strategic importance for India. The port is seen as a key gateway for India’s trade with West Asia, Central Asia and Europe.
For years, the Indian government has supported the development of the port as part of its regional connectivity strategy. However, the absence of a fresh allocation for the project in the latest budget has sparked political debate in India.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised questions on social media platform X, asking the government to clarify whether India remains committed to the Chabahar project. According to him, if India withdraws from the project, it could be a major strategic setback for the country.
Rising tensions over Strait of Hormuz
Following the US strikes, Iran has reportedly moved to partially shut down the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions in the region and raising concerns in global energy markets.
US President Donald Trump said he has asked around seven countries to deploy warships to help keep the vital shipping route open. However, no country has yet made a firm commitment to join such an initiative.
Trump declined to name the countries currently in talks with the United States, but earlier he had urged China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom to support efforts to secure the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy routes, with nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passing through it. Any disruption in this corridor can significantly affect global oil supplies and prices.
Trump also said the route is not as crucial for the United States because the country has its own energy resources. According to him, China receives nearly 90 percent of its oil through this route, while the US depends on it far less.
