New York: Pakistan has once again been grilled on the international stage. For the first time, more than half of the members did not vote on the proposal presented by Pakistan in United Nations. In fact, Pakistan came up with a proposal to “Promote interreligious & intercultural dialogue”, But due to mention of Islamophobia and special religion in it, consensus could not be formed.
Normally, such resolutions are unanimously passed but 52 voting countries were absent and 51 chose not to vote. Most of the countries which did not vote in the United Nations regarding the proposal of Pakistan, were African countries and small island countries. Pakistan has presented the resolution along with the Philippines and it was passed with 90 votes.
India has its concerns, especially regarding the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, India has highlighted how Pakistan gave the administration of Kartarpur Gurdwara to a non-Sikh body. India also expressed concern over the status of religious minorities in Pakistan.
The Pakistani mission at the United Nations said that the resolution is part of a diplomatic campaign against Islamophobia, spreading anti-Muslim hatred. Pakistan is now keen that the United Nations declare an International Day to Combat Islamophobia. At present, Pakistan’s campaign will not take place. Because many European and African countries along with India can expose the intention of Pakistan.
