The festival of Dhanteras is not just about buying gold, silver, and new utensils. It is also associated with an ancient tradition that symbolises the protection of life, family well-being, and prayers for freedom from untimely death. This tradition is known as Yam Deepdaan.

On the evening of Dhanteras, just before Diwali, people light a lamp outside their homes, traditionally facing the southern direction. This practice has been followed for centuries as part of Indian culture and religious beliefs. But why is a lamp lit in the name of Lord Yama on this day? What is the mythological story behind this ritual? Let us find out.

What Is the Tradition of Yam Deepdaan?

In Hindu tradition, Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi. It is celebrated on the thirteenth day (Trayodashi Tithi) of the Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. The festival is associated with the worship of Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kubera.

Along with these religious observances, there is also a tradition of offering a lamp to Lord Yama during the evening.

According to popular belief, lighting a lamp outside the main entrance of the house, facing the southern direction, pleases Lord Yama and invokes his blessings for the protection of family members from untimely death. This ritual is known as Yam Deepdaan.

The lamp is not merely a religious offering. It is also considered a symbol of respect for life, prayers for the well-being of loved ones, and faith overcoming the fear of death.

The Mythological Story of King Hema and His Son

The most popular mythological story associated with Yam Deepdaan revolves around King Hema and his son.

According to legend, there once lived a powerful and prosperous king named Hema. When a son was born to him, astrologers examined the child’s horoscope and made a disturbing prediction. They foretold that the prince would die on the fourth day after his marriage.

This prediction deeply worried the king and queen. As the prince grew older and reached marriageable age, their anxiety increased. Eventually, the prince got married to a beautiful and courageous princess.

After the wedding, the dreaded night arrived when the prince was destined to face the predicted danger.

When the princess learned about the prophecy, she decided to save her husband’s life. She resolved to remain awake throughout the night of the fourth day after their marriage.

She gathered gold and silver ornaments and valuable possessions and placed them at the main entrance of the palace. She also illuminated the entire surroundings with countless lamps.

Throughout the night, the princess sang melodious songs and kept her husband awake.

According to the legend, when Lord Yama arrived in the form of a serpent to take the prince’s life, the dazzling light reflected from the lamps and precious ornaments made it difficult for him to proceed. The princess’s songs and continuous vigil also kept him occupied.

Eventually, Lord Yama returned without taking the prince’s life.

It is believed that this incident led to the tradition of lighting lamps on Dhanteras. The lamp offered in the name of Lord Yama came to be known as the Yam Deep.

Why Is the Lamp Lit in the Southern Direction?

According to Hindu religious beliefs, the southern direction is associated with Lord Yama, who is regarded as the deity of death and justice.

For this reason, the lamp is traditionally placed facing south on the evening of Dhanteras.

It is believed that offering this lamp pleases Lord Yama and brings blessings of happiness, peace, protection, and longevity to the family.

Beyond religious beliefs, this tradition also reminds us that life is precious and praying for the safety and well-being of our loved ones has always been an important part of Indian culture.

How to Perform Yam Deepdaan on Dhanteras

Certain traditional practices are followed while performing Yam Deepdaan on the evening of Dhanteras.

  • Light a lamp outside the main entrance of your home after sunset.

  • Traditionally, an earthen (clay) diya is used for this ritual.

  • Fill the diya with mustard oil or sesame oil.

  • Place a cotton wick inside the lamp and light it.

  • Position the lamp facing the southern direction and offer prayers to Lord Yama for the well-being, safety, and long life of your family members.

  • Perform the ritual with devotion, faith, and positive thoughts.

The exact method of performing Yam Deepdaan may vary across different regions and families, depending on local customs and traditions.

The Spiritual Message Behind Yam Deepdaan

The significance of Yam Deepdaan goes beyond the religious belief of protection from untimely death. This ancient tradition also carries a deeper spiritual message.

A lamp removes darkness and spreads light. Similarly, knowledge, faith, and good deeds help remove the darkness of fear, negativity, and despair from human life.

Lord Yama is not merely regarded as the deity of death but also as the lord of righteousness and justice. Therefore, lighting a lamp in his honour can also be understood as a reminder to accept the temporary nature of life, follow the path of righteousness, and perform good deeds.

It encourages people to value every moment of life and live with honesty, compassion, and responsibility.

Why Is the Tradition of Lighting a Lamp on Dhanteras Special?

Today, Dhanteras is widely celebrated for its festive shopping, the purchase of gold and silver, and bringing new items into homes. However, the tradition of Yam Deepdaan highlights another important dimension of this festival.

While people pray for wealth, prosperity, and financial well-being, they also seek blessings for the health, safety, and longevity of their family members.

This is what makes Indian festivals special. They beautifully combine material prosperity with spiritual values, family bonds, and cultural traditions.

The Yam Deep lit on Dhanteras reminds us that true wealth is not limited to money and possessions. A healthy life, the company of loved ones, peace of mind, and the ability to follow the path of goodness are equally valuable. This is the timeless and meaningful message behind this ancient tradition.
