Victoria: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday for a three-day official visit, receiving a warm welcome at Seychelles International Airport in the capital, Victoria. The visit marks his first official trip to the Indian Ocean island nation since 2015 and coincides with Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations.
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Seychelles primarily to participate in the landmark Golden Jubilee celebrations, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the island nation. Before departing, he described the visit as especially meaningful, noting that this year’s celebrations mark the country’s 50th National Day.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister referred to Seychelles as a “valued maritime neighbour” and reaffirmed its importance in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR and its broader commitment to advancing the interests of the Global South.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations, including maritime security, development cooperation, capacity building, and defence partnerships. The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
Ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm for the discussions, saying he looked forward to meeting “my friend, Dr. Patrick Herminie, President of the Republic of Seychelles.”
Apart from the bilateral talks, the Prime Minister will address the National Assembly of Seychelles and interact with members of the Indian diaspora. He said he was honoured to speak before the National Assembly and looked forward to meeting the Indian community during his visit.
The MEA noted that the Indian Ocean region remains central to India-Seychelles relations. The two countries share longstanding historical, cultural, and economic ties, and the visit is expected to further strengthen their strategic partnership while opening new avenues for cooperation across multiple sectors.
