New Delhi/Doha: India on Tuesday expressed deep condolences over the death of 12 Indian nationals in a massive explosion at the Ras Laffan Industrial City gas facility in Qatar. The Government of India said it is closely coordinating with Qatari authorities for identification of the deceased and repatriation of mortal remains.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the incident as “very unfortunate,” confirming that 12 Indian nationals were among those killed in the tragedy. He added that several other foreign nationals also lost their lives, while around 66 people were injured across multiple nationalities. According to the MEA, the injured are currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care.

The MEA further stated that Indian officials are in constant touch with local authorities in Qatar regarding the identification process and arrangements for bringing back the mortal remains to India. The ministry is also maintaining contact with the families of the deceased.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also expressed grief over the incident. In a post on social media platform X, he said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries, including those of Indian nationals, in the explosion at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed earlier that 12 Indian nationals had died in the incident that occurred on Sunday night. It also noted that, according to Qatari authorities, the injured are stable and under treatment.

QatarEnergy, in its official statement, confirmed that a total of 13 people were killed in the explosion and subsequent fire, while 66 others are undergoing medical treatment. The company said the deceased included Indian and Pakistani nationals, while the injured comprised citizens from Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Nepal.

QatarEnergy clarified that the incident was an operational accident and not the result of sabotage or hostile activity. It added that production at the Barzan gas facility had been halted since December 2025 for maintenance and had only recently resumed operations two days before the incident.

According to QatarEnergy, emergency response teams along with Qatar’s Civil Defence quickly contained the fire. The company also stated that its LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, logistics operations, and export capabilities remain unaffected.

The Ministry of Interior in Qatar said preliminary investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by a technical malfunction during operations. It confirmed that all injured persons were immediately taken for medical treatment and that search operations have been completed.

Authorities further stated that no gas leak has been detected that could pose any threat to people or the environment. A detailed investigation into the exact cause of the explosion is currently underway.
