Desk : A tragic incident has been reported from St. Catharines in Canada’s Niagara region, where Indian international student Vidhi Megha was allegedly killed in a stabbing incident on May 15. The case is being treated as a suspected homicide.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and said it is extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family, including coordination for the repatriation of the mortal remains to India.
In a post on social media platform X, the Consulate said it is deeply saddened by the death of the 22-year-old student and is in constant touch with her family members in both India and Canada, as well as with the funeral home, to ensure all necessary formalities are completed at the earliest.
The victim, originally from Borsad in Gujarat, had gone to Canada for higher studies. According to her father, Kalpeshbhai Megha, she had completed a three-year business management course and later enrolled in a Personal Support Worker (PSW) Honours program.
He said the family was informed by police about her death on Wednesday. Since then, they have been coordinating with relatives in Canada to complete the procedures required to bring her body back to India.
Expressing his grief, the father said his daughter was 22 years old and that she was attacked with a knife in St. Catharines. He has appealed to the government to ensure that her final rites are performed in India and that her mortal remains are sent back without delay.
Gujarat Minister and BJP MLA from Borsad, Ramanbhai Solanki, also visited the grieving family. He said he has spoken to both the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to expedite the repatriation process.
The minister said he conveyed the family’s demand that the body be returned as soon as possible and assured that efforts are being made at the highest levels to ensure no delay.
Canadian authorities are currently investigating the incident, while Indian officials remain in contact with local agencies to assist the family and facilitate the legal procedures involved.
