Desk : US President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a sharp warning suggesting military action against US ally Oman if it aligns with Iran on managing access to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting in Washington, Trump rejected any proposal that would allow Iran and Oman to jointly oversee the strategic waterway and insisted it must remain open to all nations.
“No, the strait is going to be open to everybody,” Trump said when asked about a possible arrangement involving Iran and Oman. He added, “It’s international waters and Oman will behave just like everybody else or we’ll have to blow them up. They understand that, they’ll be fine.”
The comments immediately drew attention due to Oman’s status as a key US partner in the Gulf and its long-standing role as a mediator in regional diplomacy. The White House did not clarify whether Trump had misspoken or intended to refer to Iran instead of Oman.
Following the remarks, the US State Department shared a clip and transcript of the president’s statement without offering any correction.
Trump’s comments came amid ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, through which around one-fifth of global oil shipments pass. Reports have suggested discussions between Iran and Oman over potential fees or management arrangements for ships transiting the waterway, though no formal agreement has been confirmed.
The president also reiterated that no single country would be allowed to control the strait, describing it as a matter of international navigation and US strategic interest.
Meanwhile, US-Iran tensions continue to escalate alongside stalled negotiations aimed at restoring stability in the region and reopening secure shipping lanes.
