Beijing : China, serving as the rotating President of the United Nations Security Council for May, will convene a high-level Security Council meeting on May 26, focusing on the theme “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-Centered International System.”

According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. The event will take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York and will be open to all UN member states.

China said the meeting aims to address growing global challenges at a time when the international community is facing increasing geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, and rapid global transformations. The discussions will focus on the continued relevance of the UN Charter, adherence to its principles, and efforts to enhance the authority and effectiveness of the United Nations and its Security Council.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on May 22, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the world is experiencing unprecedented changes, marked by intertwined reforms, instability, and ongoing conflicts. He noted that the UN-centered international system is facing significant pressures and challenges.

The meeting is expected to draw foreign ministers and senior representatives from multiple countries. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also participate and deliver a briefing during the session.

In addition to chairing the Security Council meeting, Wang Yi is scheduled to attend the Group of Friends of Global Governance meeting in New York on May 28. During his visit, he will also hold talks with the UN Secretary-General and foreign ministers from several countries.

Following his engagements in New York, Wang Yi will travel to Canada from May 28 to 30 at the invitation of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

China has emphasized that its presidency of the Security Council this month will focus on strengthening multilateralism, safeguarding the principles of the UN Charter, and promoting international cooperation amid a rapidly evolving global landscape.
