As evening approaches, many people crave something light, crunchy, and tasty. Most often, they reach for chips, fried snacks, or packaged namkeen. While these may taste good, they are not considered very healthy. If you are looking for a healthy yet delicious snack, Moong Dal Popcorn can be a perfect option.
Made from yellow moong dal, this snack is not only flavorful but also rich in protein. The best part is that it can be prepared very easily at home. Its crunchy texture and amazing taste are so satisfying that you may completely forget market junk food.
Ingredients for Moong Dal Popcorn
- ½ cup yellow moong dal
- 1–2 tablespoons oil
- Water for soaking
- Salt as per taste
- ½ teaspoon chaat masala
- A little roasted cumin powder
- A pinch of red chili powder
Easy Method to Make Moong Dal Popcorn
1. Soak the Moong Dal
First, wash the moong dal thoroughly. Soak it in enough water for 6–8 hours or overnight. Well-soaked dal puffs up better and becomes crispier.
2. Dry the Dal Properly
Drain all the water from the soaked dal. Spread it on a clean cloth or paper towel and let it air dry for about 30–40 minutes so that excess moisture is removed. If the dal remains wet, it will not puff properly while frying.
3. Heat the Oil
Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai over medium flame. To check if the oil is ready, drop in one grain of dal. If it quickly rises to the surface, the oil is hot enough.
4. Make It Like Popcorn
Add small batches of dal to the hot oil and immediately cover the pan with a lid. Within seconds, the dal will start puffing like popcorn. Shake the pan gently in between so that the dal cooks evenly. Once the popping sound reduces, switch off the flame.
5. Add Spices and Serve
Take out the prepared moong dal popcorn and immediately sprinkle salt, chaat masala, roasted cumin powder, and a little red chili powder on top.
Important Tips
- Dry the dal properly before frying.
- Do not overheat the oil.
- Avoid adding too much dal at once.
- Excess spices may overpower the flavor.
