Desk : The United States has reiterated that its policy on Taiwan remains unchanged following high-level discussions between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, amid renewed attention on one of the most sensitive issues in US–China relations.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington continues to adhere to its long-standing position on Taiwan, dismissing speculation of any policy shift after the leaders’ meeting in Beijing.
Rubio stressed that the United States maintains its established approach and has not altered its stance on Taiwan despite recent diplomatic engagement between the two global powers. He further warned that any attempt by China to change the status quo by force would have serious consequences and could significantly destabilize regional and global security.
During the Trump–Xi talks, Taiwan reportedly featured as a key point of discussion, with Beijing reiterating its claim over the island and opposing any external interference. China maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory.
However, the official US readout of the meeting did not specifically mention Taiwan, reinforcing perceptions that both sides have retained their traditional positions on the issue.
Analysts note that the United States continues to follow a policy of “strategic ambiguity” on Taiwan—neither formally recognizing it as an independent state nor accepting China’s sovereignty claims.
The latest developments come at a time of heightened tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, underscoring persistent strategic competition between Washington and Beijing.
