While the meeting was described as cordial and ceremonial, the mayor’s comments regarding the Kohinoor diamond drew significant attention.

Historical Dispute Over Kohinoor

The Kohinoor diamond, often referred to as the “Mountain of Light,” is currently part of the British Crown Jewels. It was taken in 1849 following the British annexation of Punjab and later presented to Queen Victoria.

India has long claimed the diamond as part of its cultural heritage and has repeatedly sought its return. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran have also raised historical claims over the diamond at different times.

Renewed Debate on Colonial Legacy

Mamdani’s remarks have once again reignited global discussions over the repatriation of cultural artifacts taken during the colonial period. Experts note that the Kohinoor remains not just a precious stone but also a symbol of history, identity, and contested heritage.

The British Royal Household has not yet issued any official response to the remarks.
