New Delhi: Security agencies have launched large-scale blackout and air raid mock drills in the border states of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. Officials said the exercise is aimed at assessing preparedness for any emergency situation, aerial attack, or terror threat.

In Jammu & Kashmir, security arrangements have been further tightened in sensitive areas. Additional forces have been deployed in view of the anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack. Surveillance has been increased on key routes, including the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Special mock drills were also conducted in districts such as Ramban and Kishtwar.

In Punjab, a statewide blackout exercise will be carried out on the night of April 24. Sirens will be sounded at the scheduled time, and power supply in designated areas will be temporarily switched off. Citizens have been advised to turn off unnecessary lights and strictly follow administrative instructions.

According to officials, the drill will test emergency response measures such as fire control, search and rescue operations, first aid arrangements, safe evacuation of injured persons, and traffic management. Hospitals, fire services, and other essential services will remain exempt to ensure normal public functioning.

Security experts believe such mock drills in border regions are an important part of national preparedness. In view of recent cross-border tensions and security challenges, the government is taking precautionary steps to strengthen readiness.
