Iran on Monday rejected a ceasefire proposal sent via Pakistan by the United States, stating that it seeks not a temporary pause but a permanent end to the conflict. The announcement was made by Iran’s official news agency IRNA.
IRNA reported that Tehran communicated a 10-point plan to Washington, which includes not only a ceasefire but also broader measures to ensure regional stability and security. Experts say this step could mark a significant shift in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
US Proposal and Iran’s Response
The US had reportedly sent an interim ceasefire proposal to Iran through Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey. The proposal suggested a 45-day truce and safe passage through the Strategic Strait of Hormuz.
However, Iran described the proposal as “temporary and impractical.” Iranian diplomat Mojtaba Fardousi-Pour said:
“We will not accept a mere ceasefire. We will only consider peace when guarantees are provided that Iran will not be attacked again.”
By rejecting the US proposal, Iran has made it clear that only a long-term political solution is acceptable.
Iran’s 10-Point Plan
According to official reports and expert analysis, the main points of Iran’s plan are:
- Permanent End to Conflict: A long-term peace rather than a temporary ceasefire.
- Resolution of Regional Conflicts: Ending all local and international hostilities.
- Safe Passage through the Strait of Hormuz: Ensuring security for maritime traffic.
- Lifting of Economic Sanctions: Removal of all US-imposed trade and financial restrictions.
- Compensation and Reconstruction: Rebuilding infrastructure damaged by conflict.
- Regional Security Guarantees: Long-term security assurances for Iran and neighbouring countries.
- Practical Peace Agreement: A political and diplomatic solution that is sustainable.
- Respect for National Interests: Safeguarding Iran’s sovereignty and national priorities in any agreement.
- Prohibition of Foreign Intervention: Preventing external military or political interference in the region.
- Maintaining Military and Political Balance: Ensuring stability and balance of power in the region.
International Implications
Experts note that Iran’s firm stance could impact ceasefire negotiations and reshape the geopolitical balance in the Middle East. Tehran’s position indicates that it is not seeking temporary relief but a long-lasting political and strategic solution.
Meanwhile, Iran and Omani officials are reportedly negotiating to establish safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Direct talks between the US and Iran remain complex and ongoing.
