Navratri is not just a time of devotion and spiritual discipline, but also an opportunity to cleanse and balance the body. During these days, people observe fasts and consume light, sattvic food. However, fasting diets often lack sufficient protein, which can lead to low energy and fatigue. In such cases, protein-rich fasting appe make for an excellent option—light, nutritious, and delicious.

This recipe is especially ideal for those who want to maintain a healthy and balanced diet even while fasting.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup barnyard millet (soaked)
  • ½ cup sago (soaked)
  • ½ cup peanuts (roasted and coarsely ground)
  • 1 cup yogurt
  • 1 boiled potato (mashed)
  • 1–2 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • 1 small piece of ginger (grated)
  • Rock salt (to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped)
  • Ghee or oil (for cooking)

Method

Begin by grinding the soaked barnyard millet and sago into a slightly coarse batter using a mixer. Transfer this mixture into a bowl and add yogurt, mixing well to combine.

Next, add mashed potato, ground peanuts, green chilies, ginger, cumin seeds, and rock salt. Mix everything thoroughly to form a smooth batter.

Cover the batter and let it rest for about 10–15 minutes so that the ingredients blend well. If the batter appears too thick, add a little water to adjust the consistency.

Heat an appe pan and add a few drops of ghee into each cavity. Pour the prepared batter into the molds using a spoon. Cover and cook on medium flame until the bottom turns golden brown. Flip them carefully and cook the other side until evenly done.

Serving Suggestion

Serve these hot appe with fresh coriander chutney or plain yogurt. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making them both satisfying and energizing.

Nutritional Benefits

This recipe is rich in protein thanks to peanuts and yogurt, while barnyard millet and sago provide sustained energy. It helps keep you full for longer and prevents weakness during fasting.

Navratri fasting is not just about abstaining from food, but about choosing the right kind of nourishment. These protein-rich appe are a perfect blend of health and taste, making your fasting experience both wholesome and enjoyable.
