Desk: Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu surprised his Indian counterpart, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday by wearing traditional Indian attire ahead of their joint dinner. Netanyahu shared a video of the moment on social media platform X, drawing widespread attention.
In the video, Netanyahu is seen wearing a stylish blend of Indian and Western clothing. He donned a white full-sleeve shirt paired with a light grey sleeveless jacket resembling a traditional Indian “Nehru jacket” or “bandi,” giving him a distinctive Indian look. He completed the outfit with dark formal trousers and black leather shoes. Posting in Hindi, Netanyahu wrote that before their joint dinner, he surprised his friend Prime Minister Modi by wearing traditional Indian attire.
Historic Address by PM Modi at the Israeli Parliament
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi addressed a special plenary session of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, in Jerusalem. He became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Israeli legislature. Upon arrival, he was formally welcomed by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana and accorded ceremonial honors.
Before Modi’s address, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Leader of the Opposition Yair Lapid, and Speaker Amir Ohana delivered remarks reflecting Israel’s strong bipartisan support for India-Israel relations.
Conferred with the ‘Speaker of the Knesset’ Medal
Prime Minister Modi began his speech by expressing gratitude for the special honor bestowed upon him. He was awarded the “Speaker of the Knesset” medal, which he dedicated to the enduring friendship between India and Israel and to their shared democratic traditions.
Emphasis on India-Israel Partnership
In his address, Modi highlighted the ancient civilizational ties between India and Israel, as well as the robust modern partnership built on technology, innovation, defense, security, and strategic cooperation. He noted that collaboration in agriculture, rural development, water management, sustainability, and entrepreneurship has added new dynamism to bilateral relations.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian community in Israel and the Jewish community in India in strengthening mutual understanding and progress.
Strong Stand Against Terrorism
Reiterating the two nations’ zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism, Modi expressed deep condolences over the October 7 terror attacks. He stated that such brutality and violence cannot be justified under any circumstances.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s full support for efforts aimed at ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region.
