According to the Hindu calendar, Phulera Dooj is observed on the Dwitiya Tithi (second lunar day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Phalguna. In 2026, the festival will be celebrated on 19 February 2026 (Thursday).
This sacred day is associated with the divine love of Radha and Krishna and marks the ceremonial beginning of Holi festivities, especially in the Braj region. Temples and devotees celebrate with flowers, colors, and devotional songs. In many places, it is also known as Phulera Dooj or Phulaira Dooj.

Significance of Phulera Dooj
In Muhurta Shastra (Vedic electional astrology), Phulera Dooj is counted among the five Swayam Siddha Muhurtas—naturally auspicious days. This means that important ceremonies such as marriage and other sacred rituals can be performed without consulting a detailed almanac. In common parlance, it is also referred to as an “unsought auspicious timing.”
Astrologers believe that if a suitable wedding date is otherwise unavailable, marriage can be solemnized on Phulera Dooj. The day is considered largely free from major planetary afflictions, making it especially favorable for weddings, engagements, housewarming ceremonies, and the commencement of new ventures.
It is also believed that couples who worship Radha and Krishna with sincerity on this day are blessed with stability, harmony, and sweetness in their relationship.
Puja Vidhi (Ritual Procedure)
- Wake up early and take a ritual bath. Clean the home or prayer area.
- Install an idol or image of Radha and Krishna.
- Offer roli (vermilion), kumkum, akshat (rice grains), sandalwood paste, incense, and lamps.
- Offer seasonal and fragrant flowers.
- Apply abir and gulal symbolically to the deities and celebrate with flowers.
- Offer bhog such as seasonal fruits, white sweets, panchamrit, and mishri (sugar crystals).
- Chant Radha-Krishna mantras with a calm and devoted mind.
In the evening, devotees may bathe again, wear colorful attire, adorn the idol of Radha Rani, and perform aarti. Donating items related to adornment (such as bangles or cosmetics) is considered highly auspicious. Observing a sattvic (pure vegetarian) diet throughout the day is recommended.
