EU on Rajpath: A Bold Statement of India’s Sovereignty

This year, the 77th Republic Day will witness history in the making. For the first time, the European Union (EU) will not only attend as the chief guest but will also march along Rajpath with a special contingent. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will add gravitas to the ceremony.

This is far more than a ceremonial occasion. It is a vivid declaration of India’s sovereignty, diplomatic strength, and growing trust with Europe on the global stage. With four EU flag bearers and two gypsy vehicles participating in the march past, the message is clear: India is now a reliable and strategic partner for Europe.

For Khalistani organizations and their international backers, this reality is deeply unsettling. These networks, long attempting to advance separatist and terrorist agendas, are now confronted directly by Europe’s clear stance and India’s firm resolve. The message is unmistakable: there is no place for terrorist or separatist agendas anymore.

The 16th India-EU Summit, scheduled for the day after Republic Day, will further solidify this message. Discussions on the Free Trade Agreement, defense cooperation, cybersecurity, maritime security, and counter-terrorism will elevate India-Europe strategic partnership to new heights. Ursula von der Leyen has termed the India-EU FTA the “Mother of All Deals,” opening a shared market of 2 billion people and covering approximately 25% of the global GDP.

Recent events underscore the urgency of this partnership. Vandalism at the Indian Embassy in Zagreb, Croatia, and evidence of foreign funding supporting terrorist modules in Punjab through charities, hawala, and digital transfers, highlight that separatist and extremist networks remain active. NIA investigations and charge sheets have exposed links between foreign actors and these terrorist networks.

In this context, the presence of EU leaders on Republic Day is not merely diplomatic. It is a shared stance against terrorism and separatism, a symbol of India-Europe closeness, and a stern warning to dangerous networks. The Rajpath march is a testament to India’s sovereignty, strength, and unwavering position on the global stage—a position that is both challenging and discomforting for any destabilizing force, including Khalistani and ISI networks.
