This year, Shani Jayanti will be observed on May 27. It falls on the Amavasya (New Moon) of the Jyeshtha month. On this sacred day, those going through Shani Sade Sati (the seven-and-a-half-year Saturn phase) are advised to follow certain remedies and rituals for relief.
Amavasya Timing
The Krishna Amavasya tithi begins at 10:54 AM on May 26 and ends at 8:34 AM on May 27. Therefore, as per the sunrise-based observance (Udaya Tithi), Shani Jayanti will be celebrated on May 27.
What is Shani Sade Sati?
Shani Sade Sati refers to the 7.5-year-long period of Saturn’s influence on a person’s zodiac sign. It begins when Saturn enters the zodiac sign before your Moon sign, continues through your Moon sign, and ends when it leaves the sign right after.
During Sade Sati:
- One may feel mentally isolated and experience a disconnect with others.
- Depression and anxiety are common, especially in the final phase.
- The first phase is said to affect the mind and thought process, often causing misunderstandings and social detachment.
- Financial losses and emotional detachment are also commonly associated with this period.
- Shani teaches tough lessons by removing attachments and grounding a person in reality.
Precautions While Performing Shani Remedies on Shani Jayanti
- Oil Offering (Til Abhishek)
On Saturday (including Shani Jayanti if it falls on Saturday), offer oil only on the last toe of Lord Shani’s foot—not on the entire idol.
Also, avoid making eye contact with the deity while performing this ritual. - Shadow Donation (Chhaya Daan)
Take a bowl filled with mustard oil, look at your reflection in it, and drop a coin into the oil. This should then be offered at a Shani temple.
Lighting a lamp under a Peepal tree is also considered highly auspicious on this day. - Respect Women
Those who disrespect or insult their mother, wife, sister, or other women, are said to attract Saturn’s wrath. Hence, always maintain respect and dignity towards women to avoid the malefic effects of Shani.
