According to the Hindu calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi fast is observed every year on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month. The uniqueness of Nirjala Ekadashi lies in its name, as it is observed without consuming food or water (nirjala means without water). This year, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on June 6, 2025, which is a Friday.

Rules and Observances of Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat:

  1. Water Consumption Rules:
    • On Nirjala Ekadashi, at the time of taking the vow (sankalp) and during achaman (purification ritual), water can be consumed once.
    • Apart from these two instances, consumption of water is strictly prohibited during the fast. Consuming water at any other time would break the fast.
  2. Brahmacharya (Celibacy):
    • Observers of Nirjala Ekadashi are expected to maintain celibacy during the fast.
  3. Clothing Color:
    • Wearing yellow-colored clothes on this day is considered auspicious, as yellow is highly favored by Lord Vishnu.
  4. Avoidance of Sinful Activities:
    • On Nirjala Ekadashi, one should refrain from acts like violence, speaking ill of others, or any form of sin.
  5. Preparation:
    • A day before Nirjala Ekadashi, one should avoid tamasic foods such as meat and alcohol.

Nirjala Ekadashi is considered one of the most stringent fasts due to its complete abstention from water. It is believed to cleanse the soul and bring spiritual merit equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashis in a year.
