Desk:Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Amid this volatile atmosphere, China has once again showcased its controversial stance. On Sunday, China announced its support for Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests and urged both New Delhi and Islamabad to exercise restraint in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. China stated that it is closely monitoring the situation.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made these remarks against the backdrop of the deadly terrorist attack near Pahalgam on April 22, where 26 people lost their lives. The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front, a proxy group for Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.
In a statement, Wang said, “China has always supported Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts. As an ironclad friend and an all-weather strategic partner, China fully understands Pakistan’s legitimate security concerns and supports Pakistan in safeguarding its sovereignty and security interests.” Wang further emphasized that China is closely observing the situation and supports a prompt and impartial investigation into the attack.
He noted that conflict is not in the fundamental interests of either India or Pakistan, nor is it conducive to regional peace and stability. He urged both nations to exercise restraint, work together, and promote the de-escalation of tensions.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Dar briefed Wang on the rising tensions between Pakistan and India following the attack. He reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to combating terrorism and opposed any actions that could worsen the situation. Dar added that Pakistan is committed to handling the situation maturely and will maintain dialogue with China and the international community.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, India has taken several strong measures against Pakistan, including moves to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistan responded by warning that any attempt to block river waters would be seen as an act of war. Islamabad has also announced retaliatory steps such as closing its airspace to Indian aircraft and suspending bilateral trade.
Deputy Prime Minister Dar expressed gratitude for China’s unwavering support and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to the shared vision of the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership. As of now, India has not officially responded to the comments made by the Chinese and Pakistani foreign ministers.
