Landmine Blast in Balochistan Kills JUI Leader

Desk : Amid deteriorating relations with India following the Pahalgam attack, a landmine explosion in Pakistan’s troubled Balochistan province claimed the lives of three people, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) leader Abdullah, on Thursday. The incident occurred in the Kalat district when a private vehicle ran over a landmine, according to provincial government spokesperson Shahid Rind.

Rind stated that the explosion took place in the Chori Bur Kaputo area. “Levies Force reached the site and carried out rescue and relief operations,” he said.

Among the deceased was JUI leader and ward councillor Abdullah. The injured were taken to the district headquarters hospital in Kalat for treatment.

Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces have witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks in recent months. Earlier, on April 15, a bomb targeted a Balochistan Constabulary vehicle in Mastung district, killing three police personnel and injuring over 16 others.

According to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, terrorist attacks in March 2025 crossed the 100-mark, the highest since November 2014. Pakistan ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025. The number of deaths due to terrorist incidents throughout the year reached 1,081 — a 45% increase compared to the previous year.

Government’s Response

Spokesperson Shahid Rind described the incident as an act of terrorism. “We strongly condemn this attack. The law and order situation will be maintained at all costs,” he said.
