Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most important Ekadashi in Hinduism. It is believed that observing this vrat grants the rewards of all Ekadashis combined. This vrat is particularly difficult as it requires devotees to remain without water (nirjala) throughout the day. Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Jyeshtha, and in 2025, it will be observed on June 6th.
The Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat:
Nirjala Ekadashi is considered a very tough vrat because it involves restraint not only in terms of food but also in terms of water. On this day, devotees observe a complete fast and do not consume food or water. The vrat begins with a vow and is completed the following day by offering food to Brahmins and making donations. This vrat is highly regarded for its spiritual benefits, with many believing it yields immense rewards.
The Legend Associated with Bhima:
There is a significant legend behind the observance of Nirjala Ekadashi. Once, Bhima, the strongest of the Pandava brothers, approached Sage Vyasa and said that he could not fast throughout the year. Therefore, he asked Vyasa to recommend a vrat that would grant him spiritual benefits and salvation. Sage Vyasa then advised Bhima to observe Nirjala Ekadashi. He assured Bhima that observing this vrat would bring him the benefits of all Ekadashis, even though he could not fast on every Ekadashi during the year. This is why Nirjala Ekadashi is also referred to as Bhimaseni Ekadashi. This vrat involves the importance of bathing and giving donations. It is believed that those who observe it with faith and devotion attain heaven.
Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Dates:
In 2025, Nirjala Ekadashi will begin on June 6th at 02:15 AM and end on June 7th at 04:47 AM. Since the vrat is observed based on the Udaya Tithi (the rising of the date), it will be observed on June 6th, and the vrat will be completed (parana) the following day, June 7th.
Rules for Observing the Vrat:
- Devotees must observe a strict fast without food and water throughout the day.
- On this day, devotees must worship Lord Vishnu.
- Devotees should donate food to Brahmins and engage in acts of charity.
- The vrat should be observed with dedication and devotion to receive its full spiritual benefits.
Observing Nirjala Ekadashi with sincerity is believed to bring blessings from Lord Vishnu, leading to happiness, prosperity, and spiritual growth.
