Paris: U.S. President Donald Trump’s decisions have been causing turmoil in global politics, leaving several European nations struggling with the shift in American policies. In response, France has now issued a strong reaction, raising questions about whether such a move is even possible.
Raphaël Glucksmann, a leader of the Socialist and Democratic group in France, criticized Donald Trump for threatening to impose tariffs. He sarcastically suggested that if the U.S. continues down this path, they should return the Statue of Liberty, which France had gifted to America in 1886.
According to Politico, Glucksmann stated, “France gave it to you as a gift, but you don’t value it… Clearly, you consider it insignificant. So, return it. It will be better off back home in France.”
Taking a dig at the Trump administration, Glucksmann further said, “Trump’s policies are leading to the dismissal of good people. If Americans keep losing their jobs like this, it will ultimately benefit France. These individuals can come to Europe and contribute to the European economy.”
He continued, “If Americans want to fire those who built their nation through their discoveries, hard work, and spirit of freedom, then let them do so. We in Europe will gladly welcome them.”
The History of the Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty was unveiled on October 28, 1886, at New York Harbor. It was a gift from France to commemorate the centenary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the statue symbolizes freedom and democracy. A smaller replica of the statue stands on a tiny island in the Seine River in Paris.
