Dhaka: A group of miscreants attacked an Air Force base in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district, resulting in the death of one person. The Bangladesh Army has confirmed the incident, which took place on Monday. According to sources, the deceased has been identified as 30-year-old local businessman Shihab Kabir, who was allegedly shot dead. This is the first such attack since Mohammad Yunus assumed power in Bangladesh. The army has now taken control of the Air Force base.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) of the Bangladesh Armed Forces issued a brief statement, saying, “Some criminals from Samiti Para, near the Cox’s Bazar Air Force base, attacked the facility. The Bangladesh Air Force is taking necessary action regarding this matter.” Reports suggest that the attack occurred just hours after a land dispute, which led to clashes between Air Force personnel and local residents.
According to TBS News, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Salahuddin confirmed that a confrontation took place between local people and Air Force personnel on Monday afternoon. He further stated that an investigation will be conducted through discussions with both sides, and necessary actions will be taken.
It is worth noting that this area is home to a large number of Rohingya refugees. Reports indicate that over 1 million Rohingya refugees reside in various camps across Cox’s Bazar. Local officials stated that the clash originated from a land dispute, which later turned violent. The locals reportedly started pelting stones at the military personnel, prompting retaliation. Several people from both sides were injured, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a rising death toll.
