Since childhood, we’ve been told that to stay healthy, we must drink a glass of milk every day. Milk is considered a complete food because it contains many of the essential nutrients our body needs. Many people prefer to drink hot milk before bed, but some drink it shortly after dinner, which is not ideal for health. The method of consuming milk matters to fully reap its benefits. So, a common question arises: how long after eating should one drink milk?
Why Not Drink Milk Immediately After Eating?
In Ayurveda, drinking milk before bed is considered almost as good as nectar. However, it is advised to avoid drinking milk immediately after eating. This is because drinking milk shortly after a meal can lead to digestive issues. When we eat, the food stays in the stomach for about an hour while digestion occurs. If we drink milk too soon afterward, it mixes with the food, potentially disrupting the digestive process. Ayurveda considers milk and salt to be incompatible, and when consumed together, they can cause various health problems.
How Long After Eating Should You Drink Milk?
So, when is the right time to drink milk after a meal? According to Ayurveda, one should wait at least one hour after eating before drinking milk. If you have a late-night meal, it’s better to skip the milk that night. Regardless, you should never drink milk immediately after eating. Also, it is advisable to drink milk slightly warmed rather than cold or too hot to avoid any digestive discomfort.
