Enjoying the Sun in Winter or Enhancing Flavor with Poha in Breakfast, Peanut Flavor is Loved by Everyone Peanuts are packed with essential nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamins, making them highly beneficial for health. Due to its health benefits, peanuts are also called the “almond of the poor.” However, according to Ayurvedic dietary rules, it is a mistake to drink water immediately after eating peanuts. Doing so can adversely affect the digestive system and may lead to other health issues.

Nutritionist and wellness expert Varun Katyal states that due to the hot nature of peanuts, consuming them can increase body heat. Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can disrupt the body’s temperature balance. Simultaneously experiencing both cold and hot conditions can lead to problems like colds, coughs, and other respiratory issues. This is similar to coming inside from intense sunlight in the summer and drinking cold water from the fridge.

What does Ayurveda’s dietary rule say? According to Ayurveda, maintaining a balance among the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in the digestive system is essential. An imbalance in any one of these doshas can lead to various problems in the body. Peanuts are considered to have a hot nature, and drinking cold water immediately after consuming them can disrupt the body and throat temperature. Additionally, peanuts are considered a heavy food that requires the body to exert more effort to digest them. Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can disrupt the digestive process, leading to problems related to the stomach. Ayurveda suggests that after consuming such foods, one should avoid eating anything for at least 20 minutes.

Disadvantages of Drinking Water Immediately After Eating Peanuts:

  1. Allergies: According to Ayurveda, many people may experience an allergic reaction after eating peanuts. Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can dilute digestive juices, increasing the risk of allergies. This kind of allergy, especially related to the respiratory tract, can be dangerous, affecting the lungs, airways, and throat.
  2. Effect on Metabolism: Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can also negatively affect metabolism. The body needs to use more energy to digest peanuts. Consuming water after peanuts slows down this digestive process further, which can lead to weight gain, gas, indigestion, and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach, along with metabolic-related issues.
  3. Problems in the Throat and Chest: Peanuts have a hot nature, and consuming them immediately followed by drinking water can adversely affect the throat and chest, leading to issues like mucus buildup. This can result in problems such as cough, sore throat, and breathing difficulties.
  4. Acidity and Stomach Burn: Peanuts have an oily and hot nature. Consuming them can cause an increase in stomach heat. Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can suddenly cool the heat in the stomach, leading to issues like acidity or stomach burn.
  5. Negative Impact on Digestion: Drinking water immediately after eating peanuts can negatively affect the digestive system. Water consumption after peanuts can dilute digestive juices, making it difficult for the body to digest peanuts. This can lead to issues like gas, indigestion, and a feeling of heaviness in the stomach.
