Dhaka: As Bangladesh faces international criticism over recent attacks on the Hindu community, interim government advisor Mohammad Yunus has called for national unity. He emphasized the need for all communities and political parties to come together during these challenging times. To achieve this, he plans to hold separate meetings with students, political leaders, and religious heads.
Meetings Planned with Various Groups
At a press briefing held at the Dhaka Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday, Mohammad Yunus’s press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, outlined the schedule of meetings. He announced that a meeting with student leaders will take place at 6 PM on Tuesday evening, followed by discussions with leaders of major political parties on Wednesday. A meeting with religious leaders is proposed for Thursday, although the exact timing is yet to be finalized.
The press secretary clarified that these meetings aim to foster national unity. “We are witnessing the spread of false narratives regarding recent events, which are negatively impacting our country’s image. It is crucial for all of us to address this situation collectively,” he said.
Indian Media Under Fire
In a statement, Mohammad Yunus criticized certain segments of the Indian media, accusing them of disseminating misleading information. “We have observed that some Indian media outlets are aggressively portraying a distorted image of the situation. It is imperative to collectively send a message that Bangladesh’s reality must not be misrepresented,” he stated.
Rising Criticism of Attacks on Hindus
Recent incidents of violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh, including attacks on religious sites and minority leaders, have drawn sharp international criticism, particularly from India. These events have put significant pressure on Mohammad Yunus’s government to take decisive action and restore confidence in the country’s commitment to religious harmony.
Steps Towards Rebuilding Trust
The proposed series of dialogues is seen as an essential step towards addressing these concerns and improving Bangladesh’s tarnished image on the global stage. The government hopes to demonstrate its resolve in maintaining unity and protecting minority rights amid the ongoing turmoil.
